Preservation Park: From the Hydro Corridor to the South End

((Directions: Off the Hanlon turning east at Kortright Rd. and then immediately south on Hanlon Road. Go to the end of the road and park. For a larger version, click on the map)

Map of Preservation Park

Follow the dirt road south from the parking lot until just past the creek (about 100 yards from the parking lot). Turn left on the path that leads away from the Hanlon through a few trees and go up the incline. This is the yellow trail on the map. Either cross the depressed area diagonally through the middle or walk around until you are at the southeast corner. The path starts to turn left here, away from the Hanlon parallel to a ditch on your right. You can follow that path until you come to a pond, circle the pond and continue all the way down to the south boundary of the park, a fair distance. The trail borders the trees but stays out in the open. On the opposite side of the woods is the fenced off business park.

Another way to get to the pond is to stay on the hydro corridor and walk further south until you come to where the city has built a gravel path east from the corridor and joins up with the above trail at the pond. This is the black line on the map that leads away from the Hanlon Parkway.

At the south end the trail goes over a small bridge and turns left, as the business park blocks further travel south. There is a small pond on the right, just as the trail turns left. The black mark on the map just shows where you might want to start back, retracing your steps unless you want to continue back north on the yellow path. As you can see from the map the yellow path joins the red path (the Terraview trail) and you can make your way back to the yellow path this way. However, the map does not show the numerous trails that intersect all along this yellow path and it can be a little tricky the first time. The best way would be to do the Terraview trail first (the red path), noting where the yellow path joins it, then attempting the approach from the south.

The black mark at the south end of the trail also marks where you can access the Preservation Park trails from the south end. Kirkby Court is partially visible on the map and it is a dead end, currently containing a large circular paved area. You can park in this area and walk across the field to get on the trail. I have been parking here for years with no problems despite the No Parking signs: I suspect this area will one day be developed and that is when the no parking will apply.
