(Summary: Take Highway 124 towards Cambridge to County Rd. 32, (just past Superior Propane) turn left and follow the road all the way down across the 401, park in the cleared area on the east side of the road.)
This is a large abandoned quarry on the south side of the 401 now owned by the Grand River Conservation Authority. It stretches from County Road 32 about 1.5 kilometres east to Sideroad 10 and is bounded on the north by the 401 (mostly fenced off, but not totally) and Second Concession on the south (not fenced at all). As soon as you cross the 401 going south you will see the parking area on your left and there are usually cars there. Be advised that you will always hear traffic on the 401 no matter where you are in this park.
As soon as you enter there is a large pond. Great for dogs who like to swim. You can go around the pond on either side, cross a big field and go through a short area of woods to come out at the second pond. The simplest walk is to go from the parking lot around the second pond and back (red trail on map). The second pond is just south of the service centre on the 401 and the whole section can be accessed from the picnic area in the service centre. This is one of the areas that is not fenced off, so it is possible for a dog to wander into the service centre and from there onto the highway. I have not seen this happen, however.
You can extend the walk by continuing on many trails eastward to Sideroad 10: the map shows one possibility (yellow trail) but there are many more trails here. The area is popular with off road cyclists riding fast: be alert. They tend to go into the woods so the wider trails outside the woods will keep you away from most of them.
There are several breaks in the fences east of the service centre so make sure your dog will come when you call, or stay well away from this area. Likewise, there is no fence at all along the south border of the park where there is a fast moving road. And there are trails that go close to that road (not shown on the map).
August 2006: New signs posted at the entrance warn to keep dogs on leash or face a $35 fine. I emailed Puslinch Township who replied that they are not enforcing this, suggesting this is enforced by GRCA who now own the property. (I once got out of my car and talked to an OPP officer getting his bike ready to patrol the park. He said nothing about my dog running loose.) One lady I met says a GCRA employee threatened her with a ticket if found again with dog off leash. Not too much danger, I think, as I don’t think GRCA officials can demand identity. Not sure of this. If no GRCA truck in parking lot, should be no problem. They are rarely there and if you keep your dog on leash until you head off from the parking lot you will almost certainly not run into any official. Just don’t give your name if asked.
